Moving Checklist
Although all care has been taken in compiling this checklist, we accept no responsibility for errors or incompleteness of this information.
Five to four weeks prior to moving:
- Visit or call Safe 'n' SOUND Self Storage to reserve your storage space.
- Arrange your move with a qualified and professional removalist.
- If renting, give your landlord 30 days notice or the notice period required by your lease agreement.
- Make a list of people and companies you need to notify of your move.
- Make a list of items you no longer need (to sell at a garage sale or give to charity). Discard anything that needs to be thrown away and keep in mind that flammables such as paint and turpentine cannot be stored at our facilities.
- Purchase your packing supplies and cartons from Safe 'n' SOUND Self Storage.
- Start your packing. Pack items that aren't used much first, such as items in attics, garages or storage areas.
- Remember, a de-cluttered house is much more appealing when being sold.
- Keep a list of items being packed and clearly label each carton and room, e.g. Safe 'n' SOUND Self Storage, master bedroom, kid's room. Store packed boxes accordingly to make sorting out and loading on moving day easier.
- Keep an updated list of things that need to be returned before your move, e.g. to the library or video store.
- Separate the boxes and luggage needed for yourself and your family during the moving process.
- Set a date if you want to hold a garage sale and arrange newspaper advertisements.
- Arrange the transfer of your children's school records to their new school, get the family's dental and medical records.
- Start to use up your frozen food from the deep freezer and try not to add any more until after your move.
Four to Three weeks prior to moving
- Book Safe 'n' SOUND Self Storage's FREE "move in" truck (if moving from within 10 kilometres of facility, conditions apply) OR
- Book Safe 'n' SOUND Self Storage's FREE "move in" trailer (conditions apply).
- Contact your current insurer to arrange the transfer of your insurance contents policy or speak to Safe 'n' SOUND Self Storage's friendly staff who can arrange insurance cover for you.
- Contact the removalist and confirm dates.
- Confirm move with real estate agent/landlord/vendor at new location.
- Hold garage sale as planned.
- Arrange disconnection and reconnection of:
- Power.
- Gas.
- Telephone.
- Water.
- Continue packing and labelling boxes.
- Arrange re-direction of mail with Australia Post.
Three to two weeks prior to moving
- Plan your movements for moving day (stops, accommodation).
- Ensure all relatives and friends are notified of your new address and contact details.
- Make plans for your last night at old address, e.g. where you will stay, celebrations, last goodbyes.
Two to one weeks prior to moving
- Drain fuel from mowers and lawn edge trimmers (whipper snippers) before putting them into storage.
- Cancel deliveries
- Newspapers.
- Subscriptions.
- Milk.
- Soft drinks.
- Supermarket.
- Order newspaper subscriptions for your new address.
- Arrange insurance cover note on new premises.
- Collect items from cleaners, take back books borrowed from library and any videos on hire or loan.
- Organise bus passes if required from new residence.
- Settle outstanding accounts.
One week prior to moving
- Plan to use the remaining food in your fridge over the last few days in your old home.
- Plan for special needs (pets, children, sick people, etc) prior to, during and after the move. Keep medication and a first aid kit handy.
- Pack an emergency food box with some tea bags, drinks, biscuits, snacks, mugs, towels, soap, screw driver, etc.
- Consider having children or pets looked after on moving day (if children are too young to help).
- Wash and dry laundry.
- Ring power and gas companies to organise last meter readings.
- Arrange disconnection and transfer or reconnection of phone.
- Finish packing those items you do not need tomorrow.
The day before
- Empty, defrost and clean fridges and freezers. Check they are completely dry and clean before storing, including any water trays.
- Drain hoses from washing machines and garden hoses.
- Pack personal luggage. Carry jewellery and valuable documents and items yourself.
- Keep your cleaning equipment separate for the final clean of your old home.
- Finish packing items and have them in a central location ready to load onto transit vehicle.
- Arrange insurance cover of your goods whilst in transit and at Safe 'n' SOUND Self Storage.
- Stop delivery of milk, bread, newspapers and magazines, soft drinks, cleaning or mowing services.
- Inspect your home fully for items left unpacked that may be left behind. Pay attention to areas around the house, e.g. statues, pots, etc.
- Make sure the items you need first at your destination are clearly marked.
The moving day
- Disassemble beds.
- Load the transit vehicle.
- Don't leave the house until the movers have left. Oversee the inventory with the movers.
- Make sure the gas and power meters have been read.
- Check the telephone service is disconnected.
- Turn off all switches and water heaters. Lock doors and windows.
- Meet the movers at Safe 'n' SOUND Self Storage to supervise unloading.
- Sit and have a cool drink and celebrate your successful move.
After moving
- Notify Authorities and Offices
- Electoral Office.
- Drivers Licence and vehicle registrations.
- Taxation Office.
- Banks.
- Finance companies.
- Medicare and health funds.
- Financial advisers.
- Insurers.
- Educational institutions.
- Centrelink.
- Club memberships.
Others
- Accountant.
- Solicitor.
- Vet.
- Doctor.
- Dentist.
