How to Pack for Storage

Listed below are some handy hints on how to pack for storage:

  • Packing an entire house can seem like a never ending challenge. Pack one room at a time. By dividing the overall pack into several smaller tasks will help you achieve your goal easier.
  • Use good quality, sturdy and clean cartons and portable robes to pack your possessions. Check that the bottoms are secured with good quality packing tape before commencing to pack them.
  • Pack items from each room together, and label with the room (eg. Kitchen, lounge main bedroom etc). It will be much easier when it comes to unloading, as boxes can be taken straight to the correct room.
  • Label each carton by placing a note under the tape, or writing directly onto the tape. Clearly label the contents of the carton and the room it is to be used in.
  • Don’t overfill boxes and make sure that the packed weight is not too heavy. It is better to distribute contents between two boxes than try to cram it into one that you can’t lift off the floor!
  • The heaviest items should be placed at the bottom of the box, with smaller and lighter items on top to avoid damage. Spaces can be filled with more packing or bubblewrap, then tape the box closed.
  • Avoid placing too many books or magazines into one box as they are very weighty. Use smaller boxes for book storage. During transport, or storage book boxes should be placed at the bottom of the stack.
  • Cushion and protect delicate items such as china and crystal with bubblewrap, unprinted paper or your own linen (eg. teatowels). Line the bottom and sides of the box, as well as wrapping each item individually, then cover with more wrapping before sealing the box. Label the box with FRAGILE.
  • Store all electronic equipment in their original packaging, and include the installation manual. If removing screws or attachments, tape them to the item for easy location. However, if you don’t have the original boxes, then ensure that the bottom, sides and top of an appropriately sized carton is generously lined with bubblewrap, so the item is protected.
  • Use good quality, sturdy and clean cartons and portable robes to pack your possessions. Check that the bottoms are secured with good quality packing tape before commencing to pack them.
